![]() ![]() Just in case you were thinking that villainous season four ending seemed over-the-top. STARZ Tryon ordered the execution of many Regulators in real life. The bad news? He's in deep with the Regulators, and in the season four finale, Tryon ordered Jamie to hunt down Murtagh. The good news? Murtagh survived his prison time in Scotland, and is now in North Carolina along with Jamie and Claire. Season four also featured a major deviation from the books in its reintroduction of Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix), Jamie's godfather. The other hurdle? Jamie may be called on by Tryon to help stamp out any local rebellion. Needless to say, given Jamie's own heritage, that last part was a sticking point. Tryon offers Jamie a land grant, whereby Jamie would get 10,000 acres of land, but would in exchange be responsible for getting people to settle on the land, and would also be forced to swear loyalty to King George of England. In the show, Tryon represents a dark turn for Jamie.Īfter the Frasers' relocation to North Carolina in the first episode of season four, they're introduced to Tryon-Diana Gabaldon's book Drums of Autumn puts his first appearance in 1767-and are immediately faced with a dilemma. ![]() Though Tryon and his colleagues were successful in quashing the uprising, the regulator movement is seen by many historians as a precursor to the Revolutionary War, since resistance to unfair taxation was a key cause in both. ![]() The struggle between the officials and regulators culminated in the Battle of Alamance in 1771, where the Regulators were roundly defeated by the colonial military. The unrest had already been brewing before Tryon's tenure as governor, but his arrival added fuel to the fire thanks to his decision to construct "Tryon Palace" (pretty much exactly what it sounds like) in New Bern, North Carolina, using the public dime. He stayed in that position until 1771, when he became the 39th Governor of New York–but for our Outlander purposes, that North Carolina period is what matters.Īs is depicted in the show, Tryon played a major role in suppressing the regulator movement, which was an uprising among civilians against royal colonial officers–and specifically their corrupt approach to taxation.
